Sustainability At Our Core: Magrock's Dedicated In-House BREEAM Assessor

BREEAM assessments play a big part in how construction works are conducted. At Magrock, we are proud to say that we have an official in-house BREEAM assessor, Aimee Delaney, who is our Environmental Design Manager.

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is a voluntary scheme and the most widely used method for assessing, rating and certifying the sustainability of buildings. Developed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE), it provides a robust framework for evaluating environmental performance across multiple categories.

With Aimee being a licensed BREEAM Assessor and BREEAM Accredited Professional (AP), this allows us to offer a fully in-house BREEAM consultancy service. This means we can now support projects through certification, providing both assessment and advisory services within the business. Having an accredited in-house BREEAM assessor is a unique service Magrock holds, which benefits our clients, creating a more efficient and robust process taking away a third party, and instead having the knowledge and expertise readily available for each of our projects. This also ensures our projects will consistently meet our long-term sustainability goals, leaving a positive impact on the environment and the communities around us.

As Environmental Design Manager, Aimee is focused on managing sustainability requirements throughout project delivery and ensuring environmental objectives are successfully achieved. Working closely with project teams, consultants and clients to coordinate environmental certifications, monitor compliance with project requirements and support the delivery of sustainable construction practices on site. This includes providing sustainability advice, supporting environmental compliance, identifying opportunities to improve building performance and leading environmental certification processes, BREEAM.

When joining Magrock, Aimee had clear sustainability goals in mind for the business, she said – “I joined Magrock to help strengthen the company's sustainability offering and support the growing demand for environmentally responsible construction.

With a background in sustainable construction and environmental assessment, I have spent my career helping project teams deliver buildings that achieve recognised sustainability standards while remaining practical and commercially viable.

What I enjoy most about the role is working collaboratively with project teams to turn sustainability objectives into practical solutions. As the construction industry continues to evolve, I am proud to be helping Magrock build the expertise, processes and services needed to meet the environmental challenges and opportunities of the future”.

As part of Aimee’s role as a BREEAM AP, she also undertakes AP Site role during construction, helping project teams maintain their sustainability objectives throughout the build phase. Since joining Magrock, one of her priorities has been establishing the systems and processes needed to embed sustainability more effectively across the business. This has included developing Magrock's in-house BREEAM assessment capability, implementing structured evidence management procedures and creating clearer sustainability responsibilities within project teams. Aimee has worked to ensure sustainability considerations are discussed earlier in the design process, allowing opportunities and risks to be identified before they impact programme, cost or certification outcomes.

Project Stack was a huge sustainability milestone for Magrock. This was our first in-house BREEAM assessment, demonstrating the capability that now exists within the business and reinforcing our commitment to delivering sustainable, high-performing developments. Stack achieved:

-       Excellent rating

-       EV charging for over 10% of car parking spaces

-       Significant biodiversity net gain

-       Procurement of construction products with recognised responsible sourcing certification

-       Energy efficient lighting and PV system

-       Excellent CCS score

A focus going forward to improve our BREEAM ratings will be to ensure responsible material sourcing to maximise credits under MAT 03 – Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products. This includes encouraging the specification of products with recognised responsible sourcing certification, such as BES 6001 or FSC/PEFC-certified timber and working with manufacturers to obtain the evidence required for BREEAM compliance. Magrock is also placing greater emphasis on reducing construction waste through efficient material management, monitoring and segregation of waste streams, supporting the achievement of WST 01 – Construction Waste Management credits.
